Petra Arnold visited and stayed in the City of the State of California in the USA many times. San Francisco is a place of cheerful tolerance, liberalness and a lust for life, but also a place where people live on the breadline. For Petra Arnold a fascinating contrast. Observations by day were followed by extensive expeditions through the nightlife of San Francisco. This resulted in numerous pictures, snapshots, partially laid-back, partially melancholy portraits of the city and its residents: hippies, artists, transvestites, homosexuals, musicians – and seemingly 'normal people'. In her documentary photography she manages to link a narrative to her image composition.
